Every good business owner and manager I have ever met are always on the lookout for new sales people, even though they haven't posted that there is a position open. They need bench strength so when one of their people leaves, retires, etc. they already know where to find the right person for their team.
For whatever reason, you have decided that you want to make a change. Start thinking about what companies you would like to work for. Then, reach out to the person that would do the hiring for sales and ask to meet with them to let them know you are interested in making a move.
Sales people are expected to show initiative and find opportunities every day. Imagine the impression you would make by simply showing up, literally out of the blue. Really, all you are doing is selling yourself and that should be easy.
Remember, there is always a home for good sales people, so go out and impress someone who is looking for one just like you.
