True Story

Rejection happens to everyone, even when you're not selling anything.

I was at the grocery store checkout when I noticed the woman behind me in line. She was definitely a senior, tiny, and not dressed for the cold outside. Her entire purchase was three large bottles of Coke.

I told the cashier to add her items to my bill. The woman immediately seemed to grow larger, refused my offer, and made it clear she was perfectly capable of paying for her own groceries. The cashier tried to smooth things over, but the woman stood her ground and glared at me.

I certainly did not mean to insult her, so I respected her wishes and casually walked away. Because here's what we all need to understand whether we're in sales or not. Rejection isn't personal, it isn't always logical, and it has nothing to do with your intentions.

The best response? Respect it. Move on.
